Doodles on Cheap Paper

I've been sketching a lot the past few days, trying to consciously improve my skills, and also just doodling a lot.  I have a lot of these sheets of crappy brown greyish paper that I just draw and draw and draw on.  They're too big to scan, so I took some pictures!  I've been drawing mostly cars these few days.  I really really cannot draw cars well, but I've always wanted to and they're great for practicing elipses!  I didn't grow up in a culture of cars, so I barely know what a car looks like from heart.  I copied a lot of car sketches from various places like IDsketching, before actually trying my own.

Doodlin'

Vroom vroom!

Phone / TV remote..?

This car was actually traced.  I needed to understand the shape of real cars first.

Check this guy out.

Rewritable Printer Paper and Inkless/Tonerless Printer

I hate printers.  I really do.  They never work like they should and they're ugly as sin.  That being said, this is pretty damn neat:

Crunch Time

I'm falling so behind on updates on this blog....Ironically due to the content of the posts that will (hopefully) soon be ON this blog.

Designer lessons recently learned:
#1 Always have your camera on you
#2 Take pictures of EVERYTHING
#3 Always have a spare camera battery...

Designer Handwriting?

What does a designer's handwriting look like? Is it all caps? Is it messy? Or clean? Is it different for different purposes? Well I've been thinking about these questions a lot.

Some time ago I changed my writing style to all caps because I thought it was more "design-y" and clearer.  But now I'm finding a lot of my writing (especially large blocks of text) to be hard to read and visually convoluted because its all caps.  Who knew trying to write in lower and upper case again would be so hard? I can barely do it anymore without concentrating hard.  But I'm seriously considering returning lower case letters to my "designer handwriting".

That was a random post.

New school year, new portfolio, new blog

Finally, here I am.  I've been meaning to do this for awhile.  I'm an industrial design student studying at RISD.  I've made a few blogs and a few versions of a portfolio website before, but this time I'm determined to do it right.  The blogs before I barely ever updated,  possibly due to how ugly I feel they looked.  The portfolio sites, while adequate, were nothing special either.  So this school year (my last), I am resolved to have an active blog about my work and a portfolio that will do it justice.  Here is my first step.

You will not believe how many names for this blog I had to go through before deciding upon this one.  I didn't want to just use my name because that serves as a pretty dull title.  Every time I thought of a good title and checked it on blogger, someone had already made a blog with that name with ONE post back in like 2002 or something about their dog.  I'm not web design savvy enough to design and host my own blog so I am stuck with using blogger....Wordpress was an option too but the themes were too complex looking and not customizable enough.

So after a few hours of trying to make this blogger blog look half decent and not totally visually convoluted, here I am.  Hope it looks decent, and I will be posting very soon about my work, my musings, and various semi design related happenings in my life.

Until then, here's a picture of me:
